MEXICO CITY, Mexico (CNN) -- Auto insurers report that about 60,000 vehicles were stolen in just over a year in Mexico, the highest figure in the past decade.

That's no surprise to Guillermo Cruz, who has bought two new cars this year: the first after his original car was stolen, and the second three months later after two armed men pointed guns at him, got in and drove off with Cruz inside.

"Mexico 'drug violence' kills 11"

A teenage girl was among 11 people shot dead in suspected drug-related violence at the weekend in the northern city of Tijuana, authorities in Mexico say.

In one attack, masked gunmen opened fire in a pool hall, killing five people, while the girl, 14, and two men were killed in a shootout in a street.

The murders happened just hours after at least 1,000 people marched through Tijuana to demand an end to violence.

"Mexico Pays Fishermen to Help Save a Species"

MEXICO CITY — About 800 fishermen in the northernmost crook of the Gulf of California have taken up the government’s offer of payments to stop fishing with nets and, in some cases, to stop fishing altogether, Mexican conservationists said on Tuesday.

The offer is intended to save a small porpoise that is threatened with extinction as an unintended byproduct of commercial fishing. The porpoise, called a vaquita, is often trapped and killed in the gill nets that fishermen use to catch shrimp, mackerel and sharks.

At least 35 officials and agents from an elite unit within the federal attorney general's office have been fired or arrested in an investigation that began July 31 following tips from an informer.

Mexican authorities say they have arrested an alleged top member of the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel.

Police detained Jesus Zambada and 15 other suspects after a shootout in Mexico City, Mexico's Attorney General Eduardo Medina Mora told journalists.

Mr Medina Mora said Jesus Zambada directed cocaine trafficking through Mexico City's international airport.

Deaths in Mexican Jails

MONTERREY, Mexico (Reuters) - At least 17 prisoners died in a jail riot in Mexico near the U.S. border on Monday, some in a fire after a gun battle between rival gangs.

The riot started in the early hours of Monday in Reynosa across from the Texan border, a manufacturing city where the powerful Gulf drug cartel is active, the local state attorney general's office said.

The State Department has issued a safety warning around the Nogales area of Mexico because of rising drug violence. The local government on the Mexican side of Nogales still feel that that it's safe for tourists: AZ Daily Star has an article:

The travel alert — which mentions Nogales, Sonora, and Route 15 between Nogales and Hermosillo among areas of concern due to increasing drug-cartel-fueled violence — has generated unnecessary fear and concern, said Marco Antonio Martínez Dabdoub, mayor of Nogales, Sonora. The alert came out on Tuesday.

Hurricane Norbert Fading

Norbert struck southern Baja on Saturday, and caused some damage around La Paz. Right now, it is a tropical storm and weakening rapidly. It's heading towards Chihuahua and the remnants will likely dissipate into the West Texas area. BBC has the story:

"Mexico's Norbert weakens to storm"

Hurricane Norbert which struck Mexico's western peninsula has weakened as it made a second landfall on the country's mainland, meteorologists said.

Norbert, with 103 mph (165 km/h) winds, first struck near the city of La Paz in Baja California peninsula on Saturday, blowing down roofs and uprooting trees.

Thousands of residents fled to shelters for safety.

I don't know if anyone has been to Zochimilco, but it's a very interesting place. An extremely long series of canals in the southern part of Mexico City used to be the ancient market and garden area for the Aztecs. In the more touristy area, one can take an ancient style boat down a portion of the canal. There is an interesting NY Times story about the fading agricultural group that still remains. Seems like Mexico City is encroaching further:

Anastasio Santana still farms here, growing herbs and vegetables on five acres surrounded by water. Tall willow trees abut the canal that flows past his house and fields. Instead of the city’s sounds, he hears bird calls.

President Felipe Calderon has developed a plan to help Mexico weather the world economic trouble. He has plans to send to Congress, and feels there are both positives and negatives in the Mexican markets. CNN has the latest:

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (CNN) -- Mexican President Felipe Calderon laid out a plan Wednesday to help his country avoid or mitigate the effects of the economic uncertainty besetting other nations.

"The world is in a grave crisis, and this affects us," he said in a nationally televised address.

He predicted that the crisis would result in fewer Mexican exports, fewer tourists, fewer international companies investing in Mexico and fewer Mexican migrants sending money home from the United States.

Hurricane and Peso Problems

MEXICO CITY, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Mexico's peso plunged more than 6 percent against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday as investors, shocked by a burgeoning world credit crisis, fled to safer securities such as U.S. Treasuries.

The peso MEX01 traded at 12.97 per dollar, having earlier lost almost 13 percent.

"Hurricane Norbert grows, heads for Mexico coast"

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Hurricane Norbert strengthened into a Category 3 major storm in the Pacific ocean and headed on Wednesday toward Mexico's Baja California peninsula.

Norbert was packing winds of 125 mph and was located about 460 miles from Mexico's northwestern coast and expected to hit land this weekend, forecasters at the U.S. national hurricane center said.

Locals take charge of local historic site

Indigenous groups in Mexico apparently seized, from the Mexican government, an ancient Mayan site to make the site more economically useful for the local community. This apparently occurred in the area of Chiapas, which before has seen indigenous resistance to the government. Police tried to seize control, some people were killed, and now certain officers are being detained and questioned about the deaths. MSNBC has the story:

SAN CRISTOBAL DE LAS CASAS, Mexico - Five state police officers were arrested Sunday in connection with the deaths of four villagers during a raid on protesters who had seized the entrance of a Mayan archaeological site.

The five officers led an operation on Friday to remove hundreds of mostly indigenous villagers who had occupied the entrance of the Chinkultic ruins in southern Mexico for nearly a month, the Chiapas Justice Department said. The officers were being investigated on possible homicide charges.

Government Responds to Drug Violence

President Calderon has developed a response plan to the drastic rise in drug-related violence in the country. Mexico is suffering from a mass of kidnappings, and extremely violent counter-attacks by drug cartels. BBC has the story:

Mexican President Felipe Calderon has sent a security plan to Congress to fight the wave of drug-related violence that has claimed 3,000 lives this year.

The package includes a proposal to set up a department to monitor and tackle corruption among Mexican police.

Mr Calderon urged lawmakers to back his plans so "police can serve the people and not the criminals."

Sad developments in Tijuana

A group of bodies was found in Tijuana. They were attacked as part of the escalating drug war in the country. It has really been getting bad lately. I really don't know what can be done to make it better. LA Times has this sad story:

So as class time approached at Valentin Gomez Farias elementary school, Merino and her neighbors blocked the streets.

"We closed the streets so the kids wouldn't see all the dead bodies," Merino said hours after the bodies were removed. "Our hearts are trembling right now. We're wondering what's going to happen next."

Mexico's market is declining over the U.S. banking problems. Apparently there is international concern over the bank. The peso is trading near 11/dollar. Reuters has the article:

MEXICO CITY, Sept 29 (Reuters) - Mexico's peso weakened on Monday and stocks fell as investors worried about the stability of the global banking system and dumped stocks and emerging market assets around the world.

The peso MEX01 gave up 1.27 percent to 10.939 per dollar, while the benchmark stock index .MXX slipped 3.41 percent to 24,721 points.

Mexico seeking to strengthen border

Most illegal weapons in Mexico come from the United States, according to officials in both countries. Many end up in the hands of powerful drug cartels that supply most of the cocaine entering the United States from South America.

Mexicans are increasingly concerned about the impact the country's drugs trade is having on their lives, a BBC World Service poll suggests.

Some 42% of the 1,266 Mexicans polled in seven cities said they felt less safe than they did a year ago. Fewer than 10% felt safer, while the rest felt about the same.

Other results from the survey point to growing anxiety about drugs trafficking in their country, which is the main transit point between Colombia - the world's largest supplier of cocaine - and the world's biggest market, the US.

Mexico just made a big seizure of drug money in Sinaloa. What's frightening is that pressure from the Mexican military is resulting in a very violent response from the cartels. They consider themselves at war with the government there. Hopefully some order can be found. BBC has the latest:

Compared to yesterday's article, it looks like Mexico's market did get a boost in the tumult of international banks at the moment. Reuters points at that the peso is trading at around 10.8 per dollar. That's still down, though, because I was in Mexico in August, and they were trading around 10 per dollar.

MEXICO CITY, Sept 18 (Reuters) - Mexico's peso firmed on Thursday and stocks jumped, helped by a coordinated push by the world's leading central banks to pump billions of dollars into financial markets to ease a global credit crunch.

The peso MEX01 firmed 0.36 percent to 10.803 per dollar while the IPC benchmark stock index .MXX rose 1.44 percent to 23,795, rebounding from a nearly two-year closing low on Wednesday.
